When Institutions Drift, Skepticism Is Not Resentment
Public commentary often frames populist skepticism as “anti‑intellectual” or rooted in “class resentment.” These labels are convenient, but they fail to describe what is actually happening. The issue is not intelligence, education, or envy. The issue is legitimacy — and what happens when the institutions that once earned public trust abandon the disciplines that made them credible.
For generations, America’s intellectual class held authority because it practiced rigor, neutrality, verification, and humility before evidence. These disciplines were the foundation of trust. When they eroded, the authority built upon them eroded as well. The public did not suddenly become hostile to intellect; it became hostile to institutions that drifted away from reality.
Skepticism toward an institution is not the same as hostility toward knowledge. It is a recognition that expertise must be earned, not assumed. When journalism trades verification for narrative, when academia trades inquiry for activism, and when scientific bodies trade falsifiability for consensus enforcement, the public is not wrong to withdraw trust. That is not resentment. That is discernment.
The claim that skepticism reflects “class resentment” misunderstands the people it attempts to describe. Many Americans do not envy the lifestyles, credentials, or social circles of the professional class. They have built their own lives, their own skills, and their own identities. They are not resentful of anyone’s success. They simply refuse to outsource judgment to institutions that no longer demonstrate the disciplines that once justified deference.
Labeling this refusal as resentment serves a purpose: it shields institutions from self‑examination. If dissent can be dismissed as bitterness, then no reform is necessary. But the truth is simpler. People do not resent elites. They resent being condescended to, misled, and governed by institutions that no longer live in the same reality they do.
The heart of the matter is not class conflict. It is the collapse of legitimacy. When institutions drift, trust collapses. When trust collapses, skepticism rises. And when skepticism rises, those who benefited from the old authority structure often misinterpret it as hostility toward intellect itself.
But skepticism is not anti‑intellectual. It is a demand that institutions return to the disciplines that once made them trustworthy. It is a call for rigor, honesty, and accountability — not resentment, and not envy.
In a healthy society, expertise is respected because it is earned. When institutions rediscover that truth, the public will meet them there.
