Drift

The slow, often unnoticed movement of a system away from its intended purpose. In civic life, drift occurs when institutions continue to function administratively while losing their formative role. Drift is the opposite of collapse — it is quieter, more subtle, and far more dangerous. Geological drift (uniformitarian bias) to civic drift (institutional bias).
